What We’re Working On

 We had a great day yesterday at our Prayers and Squares group. One of our summer ladies is up for a couple of weeks and it was lovely to see her. Marg’s sampler is finished and it has the honour of being the first quilt of the lear to be given out. Pat has been working on a scrappy strip quilt lately. She is hiding behind the pieces. Back in the summer we started a member’s sampler where each of us took some of the focus fabric and the went to the Quilters Cache website and picked a block, any size, that began with the first letter of our first name. All the blocks are finished and up on our design partition. We are working on a lay out and filler blocks. And finally, our fundraiser quilt for this year is ready for its borders. I’ll link up to finished, or not, Friday

What We’re Working On

 We had a bunch of finishes this past week, some tops, some quilts. We worked really hard this past year, as well as this past week. Our final tally for the year was 44 lap sized quilts given out. That’s quite an accomplishment for our small group of ladies. The math says that is one every 8 days. OK, so back to this week. Tammy started a new project, one she found in our kits cupboard. It is another pre cut kit from Joannes that was donated to us. It is all bright colours in a garden theme. Janet finished the quilting on this lovely piece. It is waiting for binding. Then she dove right in and did another one, pieced by Pat. I finished the red/beige quilt I started a few weeks ago. Marg finished her sampler. I think it is bound too, although I got the picture before that. And finally, I’ve been working on our fundraiser quilt the past few weeks, getting the sashings added and quilted in the quilt as you go style. It is almost ready to get the out borders added. So far it has truly been a group project. Seven of us made different blocks. I am hoping those that didn’t feel confident enough to attempt a block will feel comfortable enough to help with piecing the borders. Our goal is to have it done by April, so that it is ready for the seasonal people who typically arrive at the end of May. I’ll link up to finished, or not, Friday

What We’re Working On

 Another productive day was spent yesterday at our Prayers and Squares group. We were all concentrating so hard that it was even uncharacteristically quiet in the room, aside from the hum of the sewing machines. Barbara finished the charm quilt she’s been working on. She is planning a skinny border in brown to completely finish it. Tammy has been working on sampler blocks from a kit. We finally laid out the finished blocks for a picture. The original design for these blocks was a queen sized quilt. We will be making 2 lap quilts from them. I finally finished sewing together the basket blocks that I’ve been working on during some of our Thursday sewing times. They will be getting a couple of borders. I brought it home with me in hopes of getting them sewn on sometime this week. Here at home this past week I finished the blue flying geese pinwheel blocks and got them sewn together and 2 borders added. It needed a third border in a dark blue, which I didn’t have here. We found one in the P&S fabric stash at the church and Elizabeth sewed it on. It may get layered next week. And finally, and best of all, we have 15 out of 16 blocks of Northern Wilderness Renewed finished. We will be heading out on a shopping trip next week to get the fabric for backing and sashing.

What We Are Working On

 We made lots of progress yesterday at our Prayers and Squares group. We now have 10 out of 16 blocks done for the Northern Wilderness Renewed fundraiser quilt. The last 6 are all in progress. So another couple of weeks should see all the blocks finished. After that we will need to go on a shopping trip to pick up backing and sashing fabrics.

Sharon finished this fun jelly roll race quilt. The black fabric with what look like dots is actually black cats with their eyes showing. We layered it yesterday and I brought it home to do the quilting. Marcia took this lovely quilt home to do the quilting and binding. It is now in our finished inventory cupboard. This lovely one also was layered yesterday. Marcia took it home to do the quilting.

What we are working on

 We have a bit of an inventory of finished quilts built up at our Prayers and Squares group, so we were able to focus on working on our fundraiser quilt for next year. It is a pattern called Northern Wilderness Renewed, found here. It is a lot of fun to work on, choosing fabrics and colours. We are trying to do colours that relate more to the Muskoka area of Ontario Canada, rather than the Alaska landscape that inspired the original quilt. This fusible appliqué technique is new to some of the ladies, so we had an opportunity for learning new things as well. We have 8 out of 16 blocks finished now. The 8th was finished at the very end of the day so I wasn’t able to get a photo of that one.

Here at home I finished the log cabin quilt blocks, but I don’t have the space here to lay them out so I don’t have a picture of them. After finishing those, I went I’ve digging through some scraps and bits of fabric here, looking for fat quarter sized bits to start cutting for a new quilt to work on. This will be the block. It can be done from one light and one dark fat quarter and will finish at 16 inches.I am planning fall colours to go with the current inspiration found outdoors all around us right now. I have enough cut to do 6 blocks now. Once I finish the basket quilt that I’m working on during our Prayers and Squares meetings, I’ll start sewing these stars. In the meantime I will go back to my blue flying geese pinwheel blocks here at home. I think I have 6 done and need 20. I don’t want it to turn into a UFO.
