Design wall Monday, August 27, 2012

I've been playing around with ideas for Avery's Truck quilt, mostly in my head. I did a little bit of cutting, in order to get an idea of what one of the ideas would look like. And now, help....... I need opinions..... is this too much? Do the sizes of the border fabrics overpower the rest of the quilt?
There will be a greater variety of lights and darks than what is here, but I don't want to do any more cutting until I'm sure this works. What do you think?
I'm linking up to Judy's  Patchwork Times Design wall Monday party.

  1. I love the quilt, but think that this border option is a bit top-heavy for it. I'd be tempted to add a lighter solid coloured border first, then add the bright printed brick-shaped blocks for the second round and leave it at that. Part of the reason I'd go that route is because there are already so many horizontal lines in the quilt, but they're consistent - the blocks around the edge start and stop in various places and that seems to fracture the lines set up in the quilt. JMHO...

  2. I like it especially the brick border. When my boys were little they would drive their matchbook cars and trucks all over the quilt especially when it had nice sashing for roads. When He comes to the brick wall he is gonna have to turn or crash into the wall.. He will love it.

  3. I like the border. It is a fun, busy quilt, and a plain border just might not go. I like the bricks.

  4. I love the brick boarder. I think I would continue with it. It is so nice a bright and cheery.

  5. I agree with Jannette, I'd add a solid or something that reads a solid for the inner border then the bricks as the final border. I think the eye needs a place a rest between the outer border and the quilt, plus it will better frame the center of the quilt.

  6. I agree with Jannette and Kate - I think it's too busy with all the pieces. But you know me: super-busy quilts make my head hurt!
I like how bright and colourful it is - he will LOVE it! He cried at daycare today when they took away the big bus he was playing with (it was interfering with his diaper change) so a staff member has been dispatched to walmart to find him a smaller truck he can always hold! :)

  7. I think the brick border is fine. If it were not bricks, colors could easily overwhelm the quilt.
While I think a number of border possibilities would work, I think what you've chosen is a good one.

  9. I'll chime in on the borders. I would put a plain stop border next to the sashing. Then the first pieced border. I would, again, put a small plain border next and then the outer border. Then bind it with a plain fabric. There would be consistancy and also still a lot of color and splash.

  10. LOL! Who's it going to? If it's going to Laurie or Avery -- definitely not the brick border! :) I like the bricks ... do you? If you do, go for it!!! I think it's obvious it's a matter of personal taste! :)

  11. I don't know what you decided (yet) with quilt in progress, but I love it. I'll go back to reading my blog to find out. LOL

I love reading all your comments, and am grateful for each one. I try very hard to answer them all, but lately I haven’t quite been able to answer all of them.
