Quilty makings

Last July I came across a block of the month quilt designed by A Quilting Life. There had already been 6 months released and I liked the looks of it so I decided to jump in and do 2 blocks a month. I actually kept up with it and finished the last 2 blocks on December 30, 2022. I think that may be the first time I have finished a block of the month quilt, the squares at least, during the year it was released. Here are the blocks. I am deviating from her setting and making up my own. I am going to surround them with pieced sashing and nine patch corner stones. It will measure 48 x 60 when finished. All the fabrics in this quilt have come from my stash boxes of fabrics. My supply of dark blues is going down. I had to order some fabric for backing. I have been watching videos lately about various ways to do quilt as you go. Once the backing arrives I think I am going to give it a try. This is one of the videos here to do quilt as you go with sashing. I will post the results of my efforts.

The other quilt I’ve been working on in the last few days has been a joint project between myself and the ladies of our prayers and squares group. We got together one Thursday and made up a bunch of red and neutral 6 inch flying geese. I’m in the process of sewing them together now. I saw this particular layout of flying geese ages ago and have always wanted to do one.  I am hoping to get this done today. It will measure somewhere around 48 x 56 inches when done. The prayers and squares ladies and I have a fabric acquisition road trip planned for Thursday when I am hoping to get a backing for this. My reds box has decreased somewhat due to this one.

I have a few more ideas stashed away in my brain, no surprise, so I am hoping to have lots of content to write about this year when it comes to quilts. I’m linking up to Midweek Makers.

  1. Hi Cathy, I really like the sashing that you are adding to the BOM. I think that they will be very effective. I'm looking forward to seeing your flying geese - that's an interesting layout. Take care.

  2. Coriander Quilts on YouTube is doing a quilt as you go series. You can make the blocks or not but she will have tons of info!

  3. I like your sashing idea for the blocks. The nine patches will set them off nicely.

I love reading all your comments, and am grateful for each one. I try very hard to answer them all, but lately I haven’t quite been able to answer all of them.
